Some of the factions that have died throughout the rounds. Occasionally, these factions may be brought back for new instances.
Shelter Defense Legion (no color/icon) - The first "faction", was simply an empire designated to protect the homeworld. When factions were split up, they had members on every homeworld. Corruption and ineffeciency led to their demise.
Augustoshen (no color/icon) - The second "faction" before there were factions, was simply an empire of 4 players selected by Thunderstorm and moved out to about 300 million km away from the starter world. They were aliens and were supposed to be a reason for humans to unite. They got slaughtered amid internal squables and being way outplayed.
The Collective (no color/icon) - After the Augustoshen got their rears handed to them by the players, the next round had another 'alien' faction as well, the Collective. Made up of 5 players selected by Demerzel under the guise of MX-74025, they grew massive in power and eventually ended up taking over most of the core systems, their biggest battle being in Hodur, taking over a million colonists. The 3 factions came together to attack them and it still was not enough. Eventually, The Collective sold the colony for many billions and kept to themselves for the rest of the round. They did not return.
Commonwealth (yellow, star icon, justice icon) - One of the three original factions, was created by Thunderstorm for the people who wanted peace and to focus on economics. Ironically, they were the most bashed on faction militarily. Their icon was the source of much controversy, as people thought the original shooting star logo was "gay." It became a sort of inside joke, and for some a badge of pride, but was eventually changed to the justice symbol to equate balance shortly before they dissappeared.
Alliance (red, ringed planet icon) - created for all the war mongering warrior types, they were meant to not be a team but rather attack each other and everybody at the same time. At first they did this, but after they saw how weak it made them all, they started to act as a team and put the hurt on the other factions for a few rounds.
Association (purple, eclipse icon) - created for teamwork and cooperation, almost set up to be the best faction. the color purple was a semi-joke because some of the main goofballs demanded a pink faction. Purple was the compromise. This faction did very well at the beginning, and kind of fizzled in the middle, but grew to be strong at the end again. It was later rebranded as "The Institution."
[old] Unitology (grey, pentegon icon) - created after a fiasco involving a player known as "Admiral Garth" and the SDL, it was the first faction that really emphasized roleplaying. They were supposed to be rebellious and for experienced players only, but saw an influx of new players anyway. Heralded the creation of Unitos, who is used as a sort of deus ex machina by the devs to resolve problems and end rounds.
Crimson Moon Accord (dark red, moon and mountain icon) - Another attempt at a dev appointed alien faction.
