Gold is a rare element, often large amounts of rock need to be extracted and processed to obtain usable amounts. While not as good a conductor as copper, it is resistant to corrosion and often used in miniaturized electronics where leads have to be very small, or to coat copper connectors. Since it is inert to all elements found in living tissue, it also has some medical applications.
