Shields are one of two available forms of protecting a ship's hull during combat, the other being armor plating.
Shields will reduce incoming damage according to their dispersal rating, until their stability is consumed. The amount of generators installed on a vessel determines the overall available stability, but does not impact the dispersal rating.
Their dispersal rating is lower than armor's impact rating, however their stability per weight is much higher.
