A production building produces various materials needed for construction. Each blueprint requires its own specific set of materials. It extracts resources from the planets crust, or grows plants, and processes them into more useful forms.

The amount of output a building produces per worker depends on the resource availability on the world. Higher quality technology improves extraction of less abundant minerals, but provides little benefit for mining plentiful resources.
