Atmoburn is the current name of this game. Historically, it was the title for a Warring Factions sequel developed between 2009 and 2012, but never completed. Many Atmoburn features, most notably the starmap, a new research system based on scientists and a realistic star and planet creation system, were subsequently ported to Warring Factions.

During the (as of March '24 ongoing) 2022 major upgrade, it was decided to use the more suitable Atmoburn name to replace Warring Factions.
