A colonizer is a ship capable of carrying colonists and founding new colonies. It can also be used to ferry colonists between colonies.

After selecting a planet you wish to colonize, use the colonize mission and send a loaded colonizer to the planet to found a new colony.

Normally, colony ships can travel through space unguarded and arrive safely most of the time. However, if you feel that there may be enemies in the area you are colonizing, then it would be best to send fast capital ships with them for protection. You may also want to make use of their small carrier capacity.
