Ships have two distinctly different options for mounting weapons. One are defensive
battery mounts, the other is a forward gun cluster. Those are a group of fixed forward facing
gun barrels or
cannons.
They are the main armament of most offensive ships and their effectiveness greatly depends on the attacker's and target's maneuverability, as well as fire rate and cluster size. Most ship types are designed to carry cannons for maximum damage against
capital ships, whereas gun barrels are mounted on
fighters for better efficiency against other
small and fast vessels.
