The designation of a small vessel applies to fighters, bombers and gunboats. In addition to being much smaller than capital ships, they are also much faster but lack range due to the specific properties of their drives. They are crucial in colony takeovers as larger vessels do not have atmospheric capabilities and as such cannot participate. Because of to their short range, they rely on carriers when no nearby colony can act as their base.
