Fighters have a very low layout capacity, so they rarely have room for protection. They rely on their speed and small size to survive in battle. Other fighters and some ground defenses will target fighters offensively in battle. If a fighter engages a capital ship armed with batteries, and if they can't dodge the hit, the damage will be extensive, potentially fatal.
