Instance is the historic term for what is now known as realities. Between roughly 2006 and 2009, expired rounds were copied and frozen. This was a cumbersome process and dropped after I9, when the historic rounds based on I8 started. After they ended, they were simply reset without any remaining record. Since 2022, a more advanced method is available and all instances will again be archived.
As recorded by Cappy, Nestle, MaximinusThrax, crabrock, Hobbes and Raber.
A round is a length of time in which the game ran without major alteration or being reset.

I1, or Instance 1, refers to Shattered Hope, the instance of the game that started in May 2006, originally as a new round to follow Relics of the Crimson Moon II. It was famous for being the last instance to feature Research V1 and hookups, as well as to feature the Institution faction and the Crusader faction.
Shattered Hope ended on January 31, 2007. Like the other instances from that period, its game logic was disabled, reducing it to an empty hulk of a game and making it a large, unpopulated forum board.
I2, or Instance 2, refers to the Idle Diverge, the instance of the game that started in July 2006 and began the new server concept of starting multiple instances to allow new players to start on an equal footing with veterans and to prevent the difficulties associated with a full reset. It was dominated by the MMORPG gaming guild "Kill Cult" and like, Shattered Hope and Era of Unitos, was ended to make way for Instance 4: Renaissance Vector.
The Idle Diverge ended on January 31, 2007. Just as in the other two instances, game logic was disabled.
I3 or Instance 3: Era of Unitos, was created in September 2006. It introduced Economy V2. It was also a streamlined version of WF, limiting the factions to four (and the Outcasts), the old Alliance, Association, Commonwealth and Unitology as well as shrinking the galaxy considerably. It was meant to be a place for brand-new players to go, as I2 had begun to stagnate. However, this streamlining backfired when one player, prosoft, who had previously taken on the entire Overwatch faction on I2 by himself and won, conquered the Alliance in a lightning strike and then conquered the rest of the galaxy, until personal problems (his sister got onto his account and dismantled his empire) forced him out as a major player in the game. After the havoc prosoft wreaked, and due to the code backfiring, I3 was known to many players as the "public" test server.
Era of Unitos ended on January 31, 2007.
Renaissance Vector is the twelfth round of Warring Factions (former name of Atmoburn). It started on January 25th, 2007 at 7:00 am, EST.
Both Research AB* and Economy V2 were instituted in Renaissance Vector. The galaxies were set up so that only Alpha contained the rare resources Uranium, Silver and Titanium in any real abundance. Blueprints were altered to make it more difficult to get offensive warships and higher technology prints without first mining these. The instance is said to be set to continue until one faction conquers all others.
* Research AB was the term for the research system at the time, when it was ported from the original Atmoburn to Warring Factions. It is no the standard system.
Deathmatch (DM) is a much faster game-play server than the main server.
It has smaller universe and better starting technology than the main server.
DM 6 is using Research AB instead of the Historic round Research.

Death matches are commonly used between major rounds to test new code and features. There is currently only one round at a time in the game, with death matches possibly starting up on the side as the player base increases.

Renaissance Vector is the twelfth round of Warring Factions (former name of Atmoburn). It started on January 25th, 2007 at 7:00 am, EST.
Goal of Renaissance Vector
RV was announced on January 1st to the general playerbase. It was announced that the admins were tired of running three concurrent rounds, each of which was slowly dying off. A number of problems had occurred, with I1 leveling off, I2 dominated by one empire (the notorious Kill Cult), and I3, which was bugged and announced over only a few months after it started. I4 was meant to consolidate the player base. A serious effort was made by the devs and admins to work out new systems and apply new techniques. A serious amount of public input was involved, as admins asked for public input on factions and presented a choice between two unique galaxy layouts. It was also apparent that a number of retired players were coming back to play the new instance.Renaissance Vector Overview
Renaissance Vector created four new factions, and altered one old one. Unitology was reconciled with the Crusaders of I1. The Venture, the Harmonics, and the Bloodline were all introduced. And the Outcast were split apart between the Lost (those who start factionless) and the Outcast (those thrown out of Factions). Each faction was given its own galaxy to start in and then a buffer galaxy, with a set of wormholes connecting the Home galaxy to the buffer galaxy and the buffer galaxy to the Alpha Galaxy. The Lost started in the Alpha Galaxy. Both Research AB* and Economy V2 were instituted in Renaissance Vector.
