Storage is the material holding capacity of colonies, as opposed to the materials carrying capacity of freighters.
Storage is rented from your colony's civilian sector. You pay one credit for every ten units of storage space in rent; your colony never runs out of space.
If you need to reduce your rental costs, you can sell some resources to an orbiting trade outpost if available, or you can set one up with either a freighter or a space station. You can use materials to build mines, institutions, ships, or defenses. You can also scrap your resources at the Junkyard. You can find this under the Scrap button at a colony's material summary, allowing you to simply destroy the excess resources. Finally, you can also load them onto freighters and drop them off at other peoples' colonies.
